I AM Maui offers Pilates Teacher Trainings and specialized Pilates Instruction. If you are new to Pilates we will give you a postural assessment on your first visit and begin to teach you Essential Exercises (EE's) to prepare you for the workouts. These EE’s will help develop your awareness, control, and isolation of your body parts so you can learn to move them with efficiency, proper alignment, and integration.
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a system of physical fitness developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient and graceful movement.
I AM Maui is proud to offer one of today's most popular exercises. A decade ago, people who heard of Pilates associated it with a movement form that was appropriate mainly for dancers. Today, it is found in nearly every gym, private studios in most towns/cities, and even Physical Therapy clinics throughout the world. Pilates is designed for every person, every body…dancers, seniors, pregnant women, athletes, and post-surgery for rehabilitation.
Six Main Principles in Pilates
Centering, Control, Dynamic Fluid Movement (Flow), Breath, Precision & Concentration.
The Six Main Principles are essential ingredients in a high quality workout. The method has always emphasized quality over quantity, and you will find that, unlike many systems of exercise, Pilates exercises do not include a lot of repetitions for each move. Instead, doing each exercise fully, with precision, yields significant results in a shorter time than one would ever imagine.

I AM Maui provides additional equipment & props such as: therabands, arcs, BOSU Balance Trainers, yoga balls, yoga straps, and much more. Pilates is an exercise that can be modified to accommodate everyone’s needs, abilities and comfort levels.
Pilates is also comprised of mat work exercises which utilizes no equipment apparatus. Mat exercise are great to learn, as one can take the information home and perform the exercises as homework for added benefit and quicker results.
Equipment, Springboard & Mat
Our Pilates Classes incorporate the principles of contrology, stability, mobility, and breath with dynamic fluid movement. We focus on core activation and support.
Pilates Equipment is done utilizing 4 main pieces of equipment. Our studio utilizes Balanced Body equipment and training. It can be experienced as a Private, Duet, or as an Independent Workout (after teacher approval).
Pilates Springboard is done utilizing wall equipment that blends mat work with the springs and Roll Down Bar of the Cadillac. It can be experienced as a Private, Duet, Trio, or as a small group class of up to 4 participants.
Pilates Mat is done utilizing a mat for floor work using your own body as well as props. It can be experienced as a Private, Duet, or as a small group class of up to 10 participants.
